Salisbury Group of Artists: In the mid 1940's the Arts Council set up a cultural organisation known as the Salisbury Society of Arts. One of its functions was to arrange for an Art Exhibition annually. The contributors were both members and non members and their submitted works were judged by well known local artists and these included Edward Seago and Henry Lamb. In due course the art section was called the Salisbury Group of Artists under the Chairmanship of Mr. John Bennet, part owner of the 'Salisbury Journal'. It held all its meetings and exhibitions in the College of Art, New Street, Salisbury. It met for criticisms of their work and had lectures and demonstrations. From these beginnings a large and flourishing group emerged. Today the group has approximately 86 members and a small committee elected at the AGM organise an annual programme of talks, workshops, visits and exhibitions (two a year). Indoor meetings take place at St. George's Hall Harnham and Members pay an annual subscription currently £20.00 per annum.
