Terms & Conditions

  • The Artists of the Year 2021 competition will run from 1st May 2021 – 31st July 2021. Entries submitted after midnight 31st July 2021 will not be counted.
  • Entries can be made online here:

  • There is no limit to number of entries you can make.
  • Entry to the SAA Artists of the Year Competition is free for members and non-members alike.
  • Entries must still be in the possession of the artist as winning entries are to be exhibited (dates to be confirmed).
  • We are no longer asking for the original paintings to be sent in for the final judging, this is taking place virtually, based off the photographs you submit of your artwork. Therefore entries must be good quality photographs of your work.
  • Textile Art, sculptures, other 3D artworks are not accepted into this competition.
  • No responsibility will be taken for any initial entries and no initial entries will be returned – please keep a copy for your records.
  • All artwork must be recent (No earlier than 2019) unpublished work of the submitting artist.
  • If you have used another individual’s tuition, artwork or photography as source material for your painting, you must first seek their permission before entering. They should be specific in their response about whether you’re able to sell and/or exhibit the work. You should credit them accordingly “after a painting by…”, “after tuition from….”, “after a photograph by…”.
  • Online entries are acceptable in .jpeg, .jpg, .gif and .png formats. File sizes should be less than 1MB.
  • Please upload one single image per submission.
  • Entrants must determine their own status from Professional, Amateur, Beginner, Young and Junior. These guidelines may help:
    • Professional – someone who earns more than 50% of their income through their artwork, this may be selling at exhibition, taking on commissions or teaching art.
    • Amateur – A hobby artist who doesn’t fit into the other statuses.
    • Beginner – Has been painting for less than 2 years at the time of entry.
    • Young – Aged 17-25 at the time of entry.
    • Junior – Aged up to 16 at the time of entry.
  • Selected winning finalists will be exhibited at an appropriate venue (to be confirmed), displayed on the SAA Website and printed in Paint magazine, as well as any other relevant SAA publications.
  • SAA may use your entry image for the purposes of advertising this and future AOY competitions, but not to recreate prints of your work.
  • SAA reserves the right to disqualify any work which is found to not be the genuine work of the submitting artist, at any point in the competition.
  • All entrants will receive notification of how their entries have fared by 24th August 2021. The Members’ Choice vote will commence alongside this notification.
  • The Members’ Choice vote will run until 8th September 2021.
  • Winning finalists will receive notification by 13th September 2021.
