October Eve, New Romney, Kent

Jed Crockett

I really enjoyed this gouache painting. I remember taking the photos I worked from, knowing that it would not only make a vivid eye-catching picture, but would also be a great painting challenge. This type of scene only lasts for a short time and, as I’m not good at painting from memory, a photo reference was a must.

Most of the whites of the buildings I left as unworked plain paper for the best brightness effect.

If I have captured an atmosphere in a painting, I am very content. The time of year helps a lot too, with lovely long shadows in the autumn months and strong evening sunshine still a possibility making key structures stand out.
