Orchid

John Ratcliffe

Another of my favourite flowers. Another flower with a great range of colours and a really intriguing shape.

The orchid specimens at home seem to be in flower for half the year.

I am not sure, but I think this pen and ink drawing come from classes held by Sarah Morrish. She covers a wide range of subjects and materials. The latter includes traditional calf skin vellum. This is a historical, interesting, and these days, a rare and slightly unusual material. Nevertheless, it is worth experiencing. It was used by some familiar names, from Albrecht Dürer to Rory McEwen, to produce stunning botanical art. You can find her courses at https://www.illustratingnaturesdetails.com/
