The Shepherd Wheel, Whitely Woods, Sheffield

Margaret Ellis

This is a seventeenth century, water-powed, grinding mill in Whitely woods Sheffield, on the River Porter. It was mainly used for the grinding of scythe blades and other agricultural implements. The large undershot water-wheel is behind the building. It will still turn and run the machinery inside although no grinding is done anymore. The Shepherd Wheel is open to the public at certain times of the year.
