This was painted on site - and under great difficulties - from the middle of Sheepwash Bridge at Ashford-in-the-Water, looking down river. I had to paint standing up, in order to see over the bridge but there was no room for an easel and nowhere to put my drawing pad, water, paints etc. Then a passer-by knocked over my precariously balanced water pot which tipped into my bag! It was a very hot and sunny June day and the paint dried as soon as it touched the paper, making any wet-in-wet work practically impossible. Still, I perservered and managed to produce this peaceful scene. The willow, cow-parsley flowers, reeds and irises were enhanced with gouache and a little pastel.
