Eawr Gracie, Rochdale

John Ratcliffe

Statue to Gracie Fields with Rochdale Town Hall behind and the parish church of St Chads up on the hill.

She is the most famous daughter of the town, although her heyday was a while back.

The church goes back even further. It celebrated its 800th anniversary in 1994. Its origins may be further back than that. The town is called Recedham in the Domesday Book and is of Anglo-Saxon origin. It is thought that the church could have been founded by St Chad in the 7th century. He studied under St Aidan in Lindisfarne, Northumberland.
