Using Mixed Media with Oil Paints

Held by Sarah Miles

This demonstration is all about using oil paints with mixed media.
There are all sorts of rules you have to consider when using oils with other mediums, whereas acrylics doesn’t tend to have any effect. I much prefer oil paints to acrylics though, because of the intensity and richness of colour, and the fact that it doesn’t dry too quickly. This has meant in order to use other mediums with it, I have had to explore and experiment to find out what works and what doesn’t.
In this session, I will share with you the rules and my techniques of using gold leaf, Pebeo paints, modelling paste, and even sand with oil paints, and how I choose to finish my work with varnish. All the time I am experimenting with other materials, including painting onto MDF, and using resin. These experiences I will also be happy to share with you so far, although they may not be at a stage where I can be sure what works and what doesn’t! If there is something in particular you want to know about, let me know before the session, and I will plan for that and try to give you an answer.
During this demonstration, I shall also bring along any pieces that involve mixed media and oils, plus any giclee prints I have made of them. Seeing how well the scanner and printer has picked up on the different effects and textures is very interesting to artists, and I am willing to share my expertise on giclee printing at the same time.
Please be aware Pebeo paints are quite pungent, and so please advise me if you would prefer me to create a video of this process before hand to show instead (provided that you have a projector). Alternatively I won’t be offended if you choose to sit further away!
