Cambridge Drawing Society

The Cambridge Drawing Society was founded in 1882 and despite its name members exhibit a wide range of artworks including paintings, mixed media, sculpture and limited edition prints but not photographs, digital prints or domestic pottery. There is a programme of talks, demonstrations, workshops, social gatherings and exhibitions open to all members and Friends. Membership is by selection and limited to artists living within a thirty mile radius of Great St Mary's in Cambridge. During its long history, the society has had many distinguished names on its membership list including Gwen Raverat, Cecil Beaton and Ronald Searle. During its long history, the society has had many distinguished names on its membership list including Gwen Raverat, who was president for 15 years, Cecil Beaton and Ronald Searle. The Society continues to provide a showcase in Cambridge for the visual arts, where amateur and professional artists can show their work together.
There is an excellent programme of talks, demonstrations, and workshops also a sketching group and social gatherings open to all members and friends. the 2 exhibitions each year are open to members only.
Membership is selected annually and limited to artists living within a thirty mile radius of Great St Mary's in Cambridge. Each April/May the main selected art exhibition takes place at the Cambridge Guildhall. This is the opportunity for candidates to apply to become members, by submitting four recent works for consideration by the selection committee. This committee is presided over by the President and consists of eight ordinary members of the Society who have been members for a minimum of five years and have been regular exhibitors. Members will generally serve for three years.
