The World at her Feet

Elly Hadjipateras

I use my young adult daughters as inspiration for most of my figurative and portrait work. They are living in an era where choice is abundant but this choice leaves them confused and anxious. The girl in this painting looks away from the viewer. My daughters look at their future with trepidation as they see the earth slowly destroyed, leaders untrustworthy, misogyny and racism still rampant. They don’t trust, they fear. In this painting the skirt is a chaotic symbol of confusion. But in the middle a butterfly signifies hope, that however difficult their world is there are always constants, belief, things that will never change.
