The History of the Byfleet Art Group On the 21st August 1968 a group of ten local artists met with a common interest in forming a group. They had been attending an art class in West Byfleet but as they were travelling on public transport which created problems with equipment. They thought it might be possible to meet locally. The Byfleet Village Hall was the first venue available and it was agreed a charge of five shillings would be levied on each member to cover costs and so the, Amateur Art Class was born. In the October of that year the then headmaster of St Marys School Mr H E Robinson took a great deal of interest in the group and suggested they meet at the school and it was then named Byfleet Art Group, the group has been located at a number of different venues over the years but in 1996 they returned to their roots and have enjoyed the schools facilities establishing a very good relationship with the school. A prominent local artist John Brangwyn, who was a tutor and had provided the group with help and advice in its early days had painted a fine oil painting of Mill Lane Byfleet which still hangs in the school hall, this work commemorated the schools conservation project in 1970. The Group meets every Tuesday during Term time between 7 until 9-30 pm...Members paint together if advice and help is required Tutors are on hand, this enables all levels from beginners to advanced to exchange ideas and helps them experiment and try various mediums. This is enhanced by visiting professional artists who demonstrate skills and techniques to our member?s. Non members are always welcome to attend these events. During the year two exhibitions are organised these are held in Spring and Autumn.
