Gary Fell

I am a disabled, self taught artist, professionally qualified, experienced art tutor demonstrator, non-toxic printmaker, painter, bookbinder, jewellery maker and resourceful general all round arts and crafts maker; living and working in community arts, teaching art as therapy, in and around the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. I have also exhibited extensively in many collaborative exhibitions as well as exhibiting my work in solo exhibitions across London and the South West. I have worked as an adult educator for over 13 years, previously teaching at Cinderford Artspace, Foxes Bridge Day Centre and Coleford House, working with mixed ability adults, able-bodied, disabled and special needs, within the governments permitted work programme. As a volunteer tutor I was invited to take over the teaching of existing adult art groups in Blakeney, Broadwell (which later relocated to Staunton), Soudley and Bream. I am a qualified well established non-toxic printmaker, accomplished in mono-print, lino-print, collagraph, etching and screen-printing. An art bookbinder adept in accordion, Japanese stab, chain stitch, Coptic stitch, long-stitch, French-link stitch, weave-stitch, with a well established printing and painting studio. I have a draughtsman's eye for detail, drawing in silver-point, pencil, charcoal, coloured pencil, pastel, oil pastel, water soluble pastel, pen, ink & wash, acrylic inks and watercolour pencil. A dexterous painter au fait with watercolour, gouache, acrylics, oils, collage and/or mixed media. A practised sculptor in papier-mâché, wood, metal, fibreglass, plaster of Paris, Paverpol and ceramics. As well as an experienced jewellery maker adept in epoxy resin, beading, wire-work, macramé and kumihimo braiding and resourceful craftsman i.e. batik, embroidery, gift card making, stamping, heat embossing and pyrography. Whilst at the Royal Forest of Dean College where I was retaking my ‘A’ level Art and attending the "Access to Higher Education" course in 1995 I was honoured with ‘Outstanding Adult Learner of the year’ for the H.T.V. region despite my dyslexia. Later at Hereford College of Art & Design I was awarded the Eleanor Hipwell prize for Fine Art. I am a 2:1 Honours Degree (Fine Art Printmaking) Graduate from the University of Gloucestershire with a City & Guilds Certificate in Further Education Teaching; with both H.N.C. & H.N.D. Art & Design (Fine Art) Painting & Printmaking from Hereford College of Art & Design and National Open College Network (N.O.C.N.) certificates in both "Working in Community Arts" 3 Credits at Level 3 and "The Umbrella Programme" 2 Credits at Level 2 & 2 Credits at Level 3 in ‘The Pottery Workshop’ (Kilns, Kiln Firing and Clay Bodies), and (Slips, Oxides, Underglazes and Glazes). I now teach weekly art classes at the West Dean Centre, Bream, privately, as well as one day workshops from my own studio. My aim is to develop and enhance the skills, experience and interest of those that attend my classes, to encourage individual projects in the pursuit of ones own style and creative aspirations.
