I can't say I was 'born' an artist, but I can't remember a life without creating either, art has always been a part of who I am. From early doodles of childhood sketches to a Graphic Design Degree, to 25+ years of teaching art. There haven't been many days when I haven't picked up a pencil or had a creative thought.
I love colour and the way light is expressed in paintings and enjoy experimenting with different materials building layers of interest and texture in my work.
I have a passion for portraits and semi-abstract landscapes, wanting to create an emotional connection with the audience.
I love teaching and seeing my students flourish both in terms of their skills and their confidence. Helping them develop as artists keeps me motivated and inspired. A perfect example of this is the Art Retreats I'm now hosting, bringing together people who love art as much as I do. Enjoying time together to develop their art practice in beautiful surroundings.
I think my main advice for any budding artist is to play and experiment, don't be precious about producing a masterpiece too soon. Give yourself time to develop your awareness of what you like and use your sketchbooks as a place to do this. Enjoy the process of making art as much as the results you'll create.
