Liz Dell HND (Fine Art) TDip(IT). Liz works in Paper, Print and Pyrograph, often with constructions and relief. The common thread in Liz's work is beauty. She strives to make works that are aesthetically pleasing, that challenge the emotions of the viewer, and bring a quiet moment of reflection into a busy world.
Paper has always fascinated Liz. Usually the support for artistic work, it has become her medium. She tears and cuts, folds and burns, creating an endless variety of shapes. Shadow also fascinates her, as do found objects. Working in relief gives her the opportunity to create shapes that cast their own shadows. These works change in mood and sharpness as the quality and direction of the light on them changes. Found objects and relief passages allow elements outside her creation to become part of her work. Her work can be described variously as assemblage, construction, collage, and pyrograph.
Inspiration often comes from the paper itself, its weight, texture and colour; something that just happened to the paper, a form a shape that she can build on. She finds landscapes as interesting as cityscapes, in shape and mood. Words and phrases, thoughts and feelings are inspirational too, either on their own, tending to abstract works, or adding feeling and mood to figurative works. She chose an HND course because of the breadth of media and content of the syllabus, graduating in 2008. After a few enjoyable years of teaching leisure art classes she now focuses solely on her own work. She works around an inspiration, and hopes it will be appreciated for what it is, an expression in form rather than words.
