As time goes by

Mary Deaville

While thinking 'Outside the Box' I decided to paint some tulips that had withered over time, (most people paint fresh flowers).
I sponged on a wash of Lemon Yellow on the whole box canvas then added pewter with my fan brush, the surface was added next with coeruleum blue and pewter.
The pewter paint catches the light to give the impression that life goes on regardless.
Next came the vase with stale water and the stems of the tulips.
The dead petals and stamens were a joy to paint with a mix of Ultramarine and Crimson with hints of paynes grey and led me to paint the glass vase with reflections and the shadows of the fallen petals.
This painting reminds me of how our life changes as we get older and that life just carries on around us. Once we were a beautiful vase of spring tulips, lovingly on show to all, but slowly our petals droop, and wither and our beauty falls away over the passage of time.
