Gnarly Tree on Glencoyne Brow

Peter Woolley

I just can't resist a gnarly tree. We came across this one, amongst many, on a walk up to Glencoyne Head, from Aira Force, in the Lake District. There are several patches of old woodland in this area above Glencoyne Park, overlooking Ullswater, where the trees seem to have been there an age; they're old and gnarly, just like this one, yet they still look like they could uproot themselves and take themselves off for a walk..

Keeping the foreground underworked was a design choice, as I wanted all the focus to be on the large, twisty tree in question. Likewise, the background was kept as simple as possible for the same reason. I had a lot of fun navigating my way around the myriad of branches, and immersed myself in the textures - particularly that lovely green moss that seemed to devour the tree around its base, and roots.
