Harvey Half Ear

Kim Fewell

Harvey is 9 and a half years old and loves to lie beside me when I'm painting. I painted this from a photograph that I took. This is a typical pose and he often sleeps in this position (as have many of my previous Weimaraners). They are a lovely breed to paint because of all the colours that you see in their coat and the way the highlights give the face depth and character. Harvey had his left ear bitten off by a boxer when he was just 4 months old (hence his nick name) but it has not changed his rock solid steady personality. It took me about 5 hours to paint this picture which I built up in layers over 3 days using alkyd quick drying oils on canvas. Harvey is getting rather slow and old now and one of the reasons I love this painting is that I know that when he is no longer with me i will be able to look at it and smile because it really has captured his expression.
