The Lane
I was really inspired to paint The Lane whilst looking through my parents box of old black and white photos one day. The family snapshots taken during the 1950's and 60's looked full of nostalgia and I thought wouldn't these look great painted really big? I'd also recently been to an exhibition of Post Expressionist Edvard Munch's work and loved the confident, strong brushwork, which seemed to focus on structure and I felt his approach would be great to try out for this painting. I started by using a large hake brush dripping and almost throwing the paint at the canvas and letting the water run down. No drawing was made, just straight in with the paint and gradually pulling out the figures etc from the background by blocking in the shapes and defining them as I went. This is part of a series of paintings all taken from family photos taken in the same era.
I am an artist and art tutor living and working in Bognor Regis. Married to a musician and musical instrument repairer, we have a 2 year old son and I have a wonderful 18 year old stepson. My husband and I work closely together. The Art & Music school that I run is situated just behind his music shop. Our work compliments each other.
I rent out music studios and teach art classes at my studio both in Bognor and also in Worthing. I began teaching in 2005 whilst studying for my BA and BA Creative Arts degrees. I manage, somehow, to also do commissioned artwork, which is usually portraiture either in watercolour or in acrylics. I have spent some years now specialising in acrylics, still life, land and seascapes as well as figures. Although now a days I find a return to watercolours and pen and ink studies much easier when my time is very limited. Portraits and figures remain my favourite subjects, people are so very interesting. I love to capture their mood and character. I am a PA with the SAA and hold weekly and fortnightly art classes as well as workshops, painting on location, art day trips and exhibitions.
