The substanceless blue

Martin Davis

This piece was inspired by the poetry of Sylvia Plath and is a portrait of her. I am often inspired by words or phrases and in this case her poem Ariel" from which I have taken the title of this work. The painting shows her confronted by an infinity of "blue" (with associations of mental illness and depression from which she suffered all her life)and placed in a small corner of the canvas, underneath a bell jar.
