Jane Betteridge celebrates the British seasons and, in particular, the first signs of the coming spring by sharing her mixed media techniques for painting snowdrops
One of the great things about living in Britain is our four seasons, and how they cultivate nature’s calendar. For me, a time to celebrate is when I first see snowdrops flowering. They’re always a welcome sight on a woodland walk, when little else is growing, which is why I decided to paint them for this tutorial.
Draw out the composition of snowdrops, making sure they’re not all separate but placing some flower heads in front of others. Then mask them out, although there is no need to mask out any stems. Leave to dry.
Separately, mix up the Lime Green and Indigo paints to a consistency of single cream. Using a Size 16 Wash brush, wet the paper all over. Add the Lime Green paint first, placing it around the snowdrops, then here and there on the paper. Next, pick up the Indigo paint and place this into some of the Lime Green already on the paper and around the flowers. Keep mainly towards the left-hand side and also at the bottom on the righthand side of the paper, encouraging the paints to mix and merge together.
