SAA Live - Allan Kirk Workshop - Street Scene in Pen & Wash

It is too easy to ignore people when we are out and about sketching, so often our sketches of villages towns and cities seem empty of crowds. In this workshop we will look at ways to include people in our sketches and bring the feeling of life and atmosphere to our work.

Animated groups of people who are engaged in their surroundings depend upon a loose and free approach to sketching that suggests gesture and movement. It is not about biologically accurate representations of human beings, it is the feel and atmosphere of the group that we need to quickly sketch with a few loose and energetic pen marks. To achieve this on the workshop day I will cover a few key rules of thumb which help me to quickly create groups of people in my sketches.
