This painting is an archetypal scene of the Yorkshire Dales with the stone barn and the fields full of yellow Globe flowers. Many meadows in Swaledale have a stone barn, used to store the hay produced in the surrounding meadow with and a separate area for wintering cows in stalls. Today a few barns are still used to store hay; hardly any are still used to house stock.
