Remembering the Bomb

Martin Davis

I painted this after the 68th Commemoration of the Hiroshima bombong because I was captivated by the little girl amongst the crowd. I felt she could be quite an iconic figure and the whole scene in Hiroshima's Peace Park appeared so atmospheric with the evening light and the widespread use of lanterns. And I love the way their uplight strikes the girl's features.
I have always been a fan of Singer Sargent and tried to emulate his treatment of similar lanterns, albeit in different light.
