Chris Halliwell

I am an artist based in Wigan working primarily in oils on canvas, specialising in portrait painting. I have been painting for many years, exploring various styles and techniques and my art is inspired and influenced by the paintings of the old masters as well as more contemporary artists. I do work in a wide range of styles and mediums, from large, minimal abstract paintings to photo realism and sculpture. I use a variety of materials from oils on canvas, photography, photoshop and even found objects. For a number of years, I have been working on a series of highly detailed portraits of famous musicians including David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, and writers such as Charles Bukowski, as well as many others. For this series of paintings my preferred style is realism using traditional oils on canvas which allows me to capture the unique complex personalities and explore the intricate and subtle nuance of human expression which can convey the hidden emotion in the subject’s face. This typically requires highly detailed observations rendered with precise brushwork. Each painting takes a great deal of time to complete, I have to be methodical and precise, from the initial drawing to the final brushstroke, every step has to be carefully considered.
In my studio I continue my long-held passion for portrait painting, and I love nothing more than to bring out the character of a rock star or celebrity face, I am constantly seeking out new ways to explore the art of portraiture. I create my work for everyone to enjoy, so people can appreciate the beauty in the faces of the everyday and famous alike.
