When a Robin Appears...

Alice Hole

We rarely get snow in the far south-west of Cornwall, so to see this little robin perched on a snowy branch on the Penrose Estate was a lovely treat. He was very friendly and sat next to us, no doubt hoping for a crumb or two!
In this acrylic painting, I tried to get the sense of distance with the background out of focus. I enjoyed observing and painting the abstract shapes and colours of the bark of the branches which I didn't notice at first glance. The textures and colours of the robin's plumage were built up in multiple layers using several sizes of brushes.
