I based this painting on a photograph taken on holiday. I love the light on the upper buildings contrasting against the dark balcony shadows and the relative shade of the street below. Whilst I have retained the general layout and perspective of the scene, I have tried to create a sense of drama with bright, unrealistic colours. I have used ultramarine blue to outline the archway and indicate shadow on the inside of the arch and the uppermost corners of the facade. The textured surface of the weathered flagstones was achieved using both brush and palette knife. Titanium white highlights pools of sunlight and makes the stones look almost wet.
