Frogmouth Bird

David Allen

After watching a video by Alison Board using mixed media techniques to paint an owl, I decided to have a go myself. I even bought and used some Brusho and some white gauche for the first time.
Rather than just copy the painting she did, I had a picture of a Frogmouth Bird that I’d been planning to paint for some time.
Although it hasn’t turned out as loose as Alison’s painting (mainly due to initial overworking and heavy handedness with the Brusho!), it was saved a bit by the eyes…. An enjoyable experiment and possibly a spring board for further paintings. I used a 300gm rough watercolour paper which perhaps absorbed the water too much and so the initial colours (inks, Brusho and watercolours) didn’t run as much as I would have liked.
Mixed media on Heaton Cooper 300gms rough watercolour paper.
