Herring Girl
A watercolour painting of the Herring Girl sculpture in North Shields.
Last year I did a painting of “Fiddler’s Green” the original sculpture remembering the history of fishing to the area. “Herring Girl” is a new addition which remembers the role women played in the fishing industry from the 18th Century to 1960s, following the herring fleet. Unlike “Fiddler’s Green” the Herring Girl sculpture is not located on the quayside so I used artistic licence and removed the buildings that surround her blocking out the sea and gave her a more fitting background.
