Sun breaking through over Blyth Silos

David Allen

On a visit to the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle I was in awe of some pictures that were done in graphite. The transition between the different tones was seamless.
I therefore decided to try this out using a photo I had recently taken of the light from the sun cutting through the clouds over the Blyth Silos - a daily sight on my dog walks.
I used charcoal sticks of varying shades of grey on cartridge paper to produce a quick sketch. The end result was more grainy than I’d hoped and was possibly down to the surface of the cartridge paper used. But a definite starting point for future attempts.
